Artist Boat Press Release: For Galveston area kayakers late August is a time when the possibility of winning one of the country's most popular ocean-going kayaks looms large in anticipation of the annual Artist Boat kayak raffle. On Tuesday, a small team mounted this year's kayak just below ceiling height at the popular MOD Coffee House, 2126 Post Office Street in downtown Galveston. "It's become an annual event," says MOD owner Ken McManus, when area kayakers start coming in to view this year's entry and hopefully buy the winning ticket." The 14 foot Manitou Kayak is valued at $1,000. Sea Kayaker Magazine calls the Manitou 14 comfortable and easy handles well in all kinds of sea conditions.. The kayak, which is built entirely from recycled materials, was donated by Necky Kayaks. It will be raffled at Artist Boats annual "Help Float the Boat" festival and fund raiser. Tickets are $10 each - 3 for $25 - and can be purchased at MOD, the Artist Boat office at 2415 K Street, and at many cooperating areas merchants. The raffle will be held at Eibands, 2201 Post Office Street, Galveston, TX 77550 from 6 to 9 PM on Saturday, October 8. Event Helps Area Kids - "The work that Artist Boat does is great for the community and important to our Island. MOD is proud to be a part of the Float the Boat kayak raffle and auction," says McManus. "My wife Holly and I have a background in youth services and we know first hand what organizations like Artist Boats means to local kids. He notes that MOD is a value-led business. That's why we recycle, hang local artists, promote local musicians, and support organizations like Artist Boat". Jeff Herman, a representative of the Necky Kayak Company based in Old Town Maine adds that the company donated the Kayak because of the work that Artist Boat does to safeguard the well-being of the Gulf's coastal and marine environments. "Artist Boat is good for kayaking, it's good for kayakers and is also good for our business," he says. Over the past three years, Artist Boat has conducted kayaking tours for almost 24,000 middle school students and trained more than 1,300 teachers to conduct integrated art- and science learning programs. The organization also helped students and teachers restore more than 15 acres of dunes, prairies and wetlands damaged by Hurricane Ike. To date Artist Boat has served over 45,000 participants.
